Czenglished names
I was reading some articles today in the newspaper and came across some Czenglished surnames which I have grown accustomed to. Most often than not they are English surnames of women where the (xxxxxx)ová has been added at the end.
The funny thing about this is that some authors/editors respect the fact that these names are English of origin and others don't. I seriously wonder if ever there would be a rule for the use of such concoctions. I sometimes shiver when I see some of these:
Sharon Stoneová or René Russová or the like...
Now why dont we go a little further and start translating some surnames from Czech into English?
Jan Skočdopole = John Jumpintoafield
David Suchopárek = David Drysausage
Petr Tenkrát = Peter Thattime
Jana Osolsobě = Jane Saltyourself, etc...
And now let us try it the other way around shall we?
Adam Deadmarsh = Adam Mrtvábažina
Peter Lovejoy = Petr Láskaradost
and maybe to leave the best for last...: George Bush = Jiří Křoví!
I can see it now in the papers: "The President of the United States of America George Bush Jr. met with..." could be translated to: "Prezident Spojených státu amerických Jiří Křoví se setkal s..." :o)
