There is consensus that a new dynamic socio-economic and cultural phenomenon
has emerged in the last decade, one which has revealed a wide-ranging
interplay of technological and societal relations that has unsettled related
value systems and beliefs affecting human interaction and communication. The
new Information Technologies (NITs) or Information and Communication
Technologies (ICTs) are becoming central for technical and inter-human
networks as Information begins to take a dominant role in society. Indeed
individuals and cultures increasingly interact through digital
interventions, to a great extent, due to the availability of these
technologies. Whether it is a "network society" (M. Castells) or a "digital
revolution", the new technologies imply a continued and sustained process of
adaptation to the changes that technology adoption necessitates.
In this lecture I will present some features that show the change from the
"Information Age" to the "Knowledge-based Society" with a focus on e-culture
and the production of "digital objects" in the context of the Cultural
Industries, with examples from the present and the future of Interactive
Electronic Publioshing.
The notion of "digital content" will be suggested as a way to approach newly
interconnected areas, since digitisation has caused the breaking-down of
traditional boundaries and hierarchies. In my critical framework the figure
of "convergence" will be shown as a key conceptual tool emerging from major
sectors --such as technology development and policy contributions-- with
special attention to current value chains, key trends and challenges as they
affect the correlation between the "content industry" and meaning production
through the digitisation of cultural content.
Myriam Diocaretz is the Digital Culture research strand leader at ECDC. She
